Why Choose a Chest Freezer for Your RV?

When it comes to selecting the best portable freezer for your RV, chest freezers offer several advantages over other types of freezers. The first notable benefit is their larger capacity, allowing you to store more food and beverages for extended trips. The horizontal design of chest freezers maximizes storage space, enabling you to pack a variety of frozen items without compromising on organization.

Chest freezers are well-insulated, ensuring efficient cooling and minimal energy consumption. This feature is particularly important for RV owners as it helps preserve battery life and reduces reliance on electricity. Additionally, chest freezers often have thicker walls and better sealing mechanisms, making them ideal for off-grid adventures.

Key Features to Consider

Temperature Control and Range

One of the most critical features to consider when selecting an RV chest freezer is its temperature control mechanism. Look for models that offer adjustable temperature settings, allowing you to tailor the freezing conditions based on your specific needs. A wide temperature range is also beneficial, as it enables you to use the freezer for various purposes, such as freezing ice cream or storing highly perishable items.

Power Options

Since RVs operate on different power sources, it’s essential to choose a chest freezer that aligns with your RV’s power capabilities. Some freezers can be powered by both AC (shore power) and DC (battery power) sources, providing flexibility for different camping scenarios. Additionally, there are models equipped with solar compatibility, allowing you to harness renewable energy to keep your freezer running efficiently.

Portability and Size

As the article’s main focus is on portable freezers, size, and portability play crucial roles. Consider the dimensions and weight of the chest freezer to ensure it fits well in your RV’s limited space and is easy to move around. Look for models with sturdy handles, removable baskets, and wheels for enhanced mobility.

Energy Efficiency

When you’re on the road, energy efficiency becomes vital to prolong battery life and minimize fuel costs. Look for RV chest freezers with energy-efficient features such as low-power consumption compressors, high-quality insulation, and energy-saving modes.

Since it is not recommended to keep your fridge running while driving, we have a few helpful tips and tricks to help keep your food cold while driving.

Knowing how to pack your fridge correctly will be an essential step in keeping your refrigerator items cold while driving.

The refrigerators found in RVs are usually Norcold or Dometic which have a few small differences in their controls and adjustments, but they remain similar. You should know that RV refrigerators are not like household refrigerators.

More on: How Do I Keep My RV Fridge Cold While Traveling

Should You Leave Your RV Fridge On All The Time?

It is not necessary to leave your RV fridge on all the time.

This will not extend its life. However, before going on a camping trip, you must turn on your RV refrigerator within 24 hours. This will allow your refrigerator to cool down in time for your trip.

Still, if the refrigerator is not being turned off and on repeatedly, it will run more efficiently.

Some people claim that it will extend the life of your RV refrigerator if you let it run, even when you are not using it.

But, this does not include leaving your RV fridge on during the off-season.

How Long Will A 20 lb Propane Tank Run A Refrigerator?

11 days! If you’re using a standard 20-lb propane tank, you can expect it to last around eleven days before needing to replace or refill it.

Propane is a clean, portable source of fuel for many RV refrigerator models.

And if you’re boondocking, or have no electrical hookups, it might be your only source of power. So it’s important to plan your propane consumption accordingly.

How Long Will a 12-volt Battery Run a RV Refrigerator? 35 to 50 hours before it's completely drained.

Wrapping Up

How Long Will RV Fridge Stay Cold Without Power? When you go RV camping, you are able to enjoy some of the luxuries of home

Traditional tent camping requires you to bring a cooler to store your food; in an RV, you often can leave your food in an actual fridge!

Now you are finally ready to get on the road and head off to a nature retreat (but without having to rough it!) Relax, unwind, and grab a cold can of soda while you watch TV or sing songs with the family in your new home away from home.

Let’s dig into How To Keep RV Fridge Cold While Driving.

Going from campground to campground, station to station, or Boondock to Boondock it’s a struggle to know how to keep your RV cold while driving.

Cold food and beverages are not only a preference, it’s a necessity for produce. And, a need to keep those juices cold if you’re RVing with children.

Do you plan to have a running RV fridge while driving? Here we go over tips and best practices when it comes to keeping your food at a pleasant temperature during your travels.

There are three types of power sources that you can use in an RV:

Propane Tank: Pocket friendly but high risk

120V AC: A Generator Undoubtably safer

12V DC: Draw from the vehicle’s battery

How To Keep RV Fridge Cold While Driving?

1. Plan and Prep Temperature a Day Ahead

Temperature Knob: Turn the temp down as low as possible the day before traveling. This increases the length of time food stays good.

Packing, Ice packs, and frozen foods: Following the same principle, keep plenty of ice, and ice bags and pack frozen foods with other foods.

Pack the fridge close to max capacity. Don’t leave too much open space if you can help it.

Make sure to put the most perishable items, like meat and dairy products, on the bottom shelves and the least perishable items, like soda cans, on the top shelves.

2. Avoid Opening The Fridge When You’re On The Road

Don’t open the fridge too often while you’re on the road. Minimizing opening the fridge door will keep all the cool air in and the heat out.

Constant opening and closing also consume more energy and watts. RV refrigerators use 500-600 watts for starting whereas running they tend to consume around 150 watts.

Plan your meal times according to lean and shut the door quickly after grabbing what you need.

That may seem obvious, but how many times have we gone to make a sandwich and left the door open between meat and cheese.

3. Generators To The Rescue

Use a portable generator to power a fridge while on the road. Your generator can certainly provide enough 120V AC power to run your fridge while driving.

An inverter generator can also be used for your heating and cooling system in your RV. The average generator has 2000-3000 starting watts.

Oh… and having your air conditioner running keeps the entire RV cool!

Related: Quietest Generator for RV Camping

4. Go Powerless With A RV Fridge Fan

Consider installing an RV Refrigerator fan to limit usage while in motion.

Now that we got that clear there is more to know about your RV fridge than knowing how to keep RV fridge cold while driving. So here are a few faqs…

Can You Run RV Fridge While Driving?

Yes, you can run your RV fridge while driving, but you probably shouldn’t. Especially if it’s running on propane.

The risks are too high.

The safest way to keep your fridge on while driving is to switch it to 12V DC (three-way refrigerator) power source. They are compatible with power sources like AC power, DC power, LP gas, house batteries, and shore power.

If you own a two-way RV fridge, then you should use a generator that can produce enough power to keep the fridge running.

Again, it’s probably best to take a break during your trip (for food, rest, etc.) which will give you time to turn on the fridge.

Is It Dangerous To Drive with a Propane-Powered RV Fridge On?

Yes, it is a terrible idea to drive while a propane-powered RV refrigerated is on. You never know if a sudden turn will jostle the tank and cause a gas leak.

It is not illegal to drive while your propane-fueled RV fridge is on, you still must turn off your RV propane system at gas stations, through tunnels, and bridges.

There has been some debate about these concerns but we like to exercise the “better safe than sorry” philosophy. Turn your propane off at the tank.

While we’re on the subject, pressure testing on the propane system should be done annually.

The ramp in your fridge will maintain briefly and will gradually decrease over a 6 to 8 hour period.

Your fridge drops about 4 degrees Fahrenheit every 8 hours that it stays off. This means that your food will stay fairly protected without your fridge remaining on.

You can maintain an RV fridge a bit longer if you install a fridge fan.

How Long Will An RV Fridge Run On Battery?

Your standard RV fridge will run on battery for weeks. However, if it is running on Dc electricity, it will drain the batteries within three hours. This is also variable depending on your battery’s strength.

Enjoy The Ride and Keep It Cool!

Keeping your food cold and yourself safe is extremely doable in reference to knowing how to keep RV fridge cold while driving.

It is also extremely easy to run into danger (and the law) by neglecting to turn off your propane tank.

All in all, keeping your food edible won’t be an issue if you do some simple adjustments and moments of planning. In other cases, you may have to invest in a product of 2.

Either way, follow the tips above and you’ll be just fine. You can also ask other RVers what they’ve tried.

Before we get into how long to keep fresh water in RV tank, we’d like to clarify something for the newbie RV traveler that there are 3 types of RV water tanks: Gray water tanks, black water tanks, and freshwater tanks.

Freshwater tanks are what this post is mainly about. These tanks hold the water that comes out of your taps, sinks, and showers.

Freshwater is also your drinking water, so when talking about draining and clean freshwater we are referring to keeping your drinking water healthy as well.

You can also opt to buy bottled water for your trips, especially if you plan on renting, or taking a short trip.

How Long To Keep Fresh Water in RV Tank?

You can keep fresh water in an RV tank for two weeks. The two-week rule is meant for people who aren’t using their water during that time.

I like to dump our tanks after every trip, then refill them before I go back on the road so as not to really worry about it too much.

Water does get undrinkable. Water left sitting for too long can taste horrible, but more importantly, it can be unsafe and contaminated.

Water sitting dormant in a plastic tank for two weeks can grow algae, mold, and bacteria. But, if you maintain your bank the chances of matters getting extremely bad is low.
