On the opposite side of the spectrum comes the Hessaire MC18M Portable Evaporative Cooler

It is important for campers to understand the difference between an air conditioner that uses refrigerant like the Mark 2, as compared to swamp coolers which take warm air from the outside, and cool them down with wet cooler pads.

According to the US Department of Energy, a swamp cooler like the Hessaire can lower the ambient temperature by up to 15 degrees. The bad news is that swamp coolers only work well in places with low humidity. So don’t plan on using them outside Atlanta Ga or Austin Texas.

As to the Hessaire:

This is a powerful cooler that can cool a huge room, so unless you camp with a circus tent, you’ll be covered.

But no battery

Unfortunately, there is no battery operation. The Hessaire is strictly a power-only cooling system. You’ll either need a power plugin or a generator to use the Hessaire for camping.

The best portable swamp cooler for the money

The Hessaire is only a fraction of the cost of a true air conditioning system, and in places with low humidity, if have a place to plug it in, they work great.

The EENOUR QN750 Portable Air Conditioner is made in the light of the Zero Breeze Mark 2.

The EENOUR QN750 it both heats and cools, comes with a lithium-ion battery, and has over twice the cooling power as other ACs.

However, it’s still small and sleek, and if you already have a lithium-ion battery, then simply buy the attachment to allow the battery to run the unit and you are all set.

The advantage of the EENOUR is that it is quite a bit cheaper.

Best for smaller tents

Significantly cheaper

Weighs less

The Evapoloar is alright for a 2-man or 1 man tent. As sleek as it looks, despite the advertising hyperbole, in the end, it’s simply a tiny swamp cooler.

Does it work? Plenty of reviewers say yes, although most of those reviewers are from places with low humidity in the first place.

Advantages:

Fairly cheap as person cooling devices are concerned

Must be plugged in but uses very little electricity

Will spot cool a small room and does a decent job in a small tent

How Do You Vent a Portable Air Conditioner in a Tent?

The main idea is to have plenty of ventilation. You’ll need to have an open spot behind your air conditioner to eliminate all gasses and pollution that may build up.

With some personal air conditioners like the Mark 2, this is not a problem, but generally, you want plenty of outside ventilation by creating a small exit hole for airflow.

With a true air conditioner, you’ll need to vent the water that builds up as the air conditioner actually removes humidity from the air and the water build-up needs to be vented outside the tent.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Fire Pit

Before choosing the perfect portable fire pit for your RV adventures, consider the following factors:

Features & Fuel

When selecting a portable fire pit, consider the type of fuel it uses. Some options are wood-burning or charcoal, while others operate on propane. Determine which fuel source aligns with your preferences and camping style.

Think about additional features such as grilling surfaces, adjustable flames, and smokeless technology. These features can enhance your campfire experience and add versatility to your outdoor cooking.

Portability

The portability of your fire pit is crucial for RV travel. Assess the weight and size of the fire pit to ensure it fits comfortably in your RV storage space. Look for options that come with carrying cases or handles for added convenience. Remember that easy setup and takedown are essential, especially when you’re on the move. Choose a fire pit that suits your mobility needs without compromising on functionality.

Location

Consider where you plan to set up your fire pit during your camping adventures. Whether you’ll be at a designated campsite, a beach, or a remote location, it’s vital to ensure your chosen fire pit complies with local regulations and restrictions. Some areas may have specific rules regarding campfires, so always check ahead of time to avoid any issues during your trip.

Dry Camping Battery Maintenance Tips

Now, let’s dive into some essential dry camping battery maintenance tips to ensure your power source remains reliable throughout your adventures. These tips apply to all types of RV batteries.

1. What’s the best RV battery for cold weather?

Cold weather can be a battery’s worst enemy, as it reduces their efficiency. For frigid adventures, consider opting for an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) or a lithium battery. AGM batteries are known for their ability to perform well in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.

They also have a low self-discharge rate, which is crucial in cold weather when the battery isn’t constantly charged. Lithium batteries, while more expensive, handle temperature fluctuations exceptionally well and deliver consistent power even in freezing conditions.

Among the batteries we’ve reviewed, the Battle Born LiFePO4 and Trojan Reliant AGM batteries are great choices for cold-weather camping.

Related: Best Portable AC for RV Reviews

2. How long will an RV battery last during dry camping?

The lifespan of an RV battery during dry camping depends on various factors such as the battery’s capacity, the load it’s powering, and how efficiently it’s managed.

On average, a good deep-cycle RV battery can last anywhere from 2 to 7 days while dry camping.

Using power-hungry appliances like air conditioners or heaters will significantly reduce this timeframe. To extend your battery’s life, consider using solar panels to recharge during the day, and practice energy-saving habits.

3. How many batteries do I need for dry camping?

The number of batteries you need for dry camping depends on your power consumption and how long you plan to be off-grid. As a general guideline, most dry campers find that having at least two deep-cycle batteries is sufficient for a weekend trip.

For longer adventures, you may need more. To determine your specific needs, calculate your daily power consumption and multiply it by the number of days you plan to be off-grid. It’s also wise to have a backup power source, like a portable generator or solar panels, just in case.

4. How long will a dry charged battery last?

A dry-charged battery, also known as a “wet” battery, has no electrolyte and is filled with acid just before installation.

The shelf life of a dry-charged battery can vary, but typically it can be stored for several months to a year before losing significant capacity.

To maximize its lifespan, store it in a cool, dry place and periodically check its charge. Once filled with electrolytes, the battery’s performance should be similar to a regular battery.

Related: How to keep RV Generator Quiet

5. What happens when a dry cell battery dies?

When a dry cell battery dies, it typically means it has reached the end of its useful life. Signs of a dying battery include reduced capacity, difficulty holding a charge, or complete failure to power your devices. In most cases, dry cell batteries are not rechargeable, so it’s best to recycle them responsibly. To prevent premature battery death, follow proper maintenance practices and avoid deep discharges whenever possible.

Related: How Long Will RV Fridge Stay Cold Without Power?

6. What drains an RV battery the fastest during dry camping?

The biggest culprits for draining an RV battery quickly during dry camping are power-hungry appliances such as air conditioners, heaters, and microwave ovens. These devices draw a substantial amount of power and can significantly reduce your battery’s lifespan if used excessively.

To conserve power, use these appliances sparingly and consider investing in energy-efficient alternatives. Additionally, lights and electronics left on when not in use can also contribute to a drained battery.

7. Is it okay to leave the water pump on in an RV if dry camping?

Leaving the water pump on in your RV during dry camping is generally not recommended. The water pump consumes electricity each time it pressurizes the water system, which can add up over time and drain your battery. It’s better to only turn on the water pump when you need it, such as when using the sink or shower. To further conserve power, consider using water-saving fixtures and being mindful of water usage while dry camping.

How to Install an RV Ladder Bike Rack

So you’re looking to install an RV ladder bike rack? Good on you! With the right tools and a bit of elbow grease installing your own bike rack can be a pretty simple job.

To get started, you’ll need some basic tools:

Drill

Screwdriver

Sockets

If you already have a collection of these tools in your garage or shed, then you’re ready to start installing! Next is picking out the proper ladder rack for your RV that fits both your budget and the size of the bicycles. Now, all there’s left to do is mount it properly into place.

Following the installation tutorial thoroughly and double-checking everything along the way will ensure you don’t miss any important steps.

After installing your new RV ladder bike rack, take it for a spin and enjoy being able to bike wherever your voyages may take you!

Related: Best RV Rental for Cross Country

Tips for using an RV Ladder Bike Rack

As an RV enthusiast, to get the most out of your ladder bike rack, make sure it can adequately hold all of your bicycles as some mounts may only support up to two bikes while others can fit multiple.

My favorite tip is to wrap bungee cords around each bicycle frame before mounting them onto the rack; that way you can easily access them without fear of them slipping off when driving.

Finally, be sure to secure the rack tightly onto your RV ladder with u-bolts and double-check if needed wherever you go. With proper use and maintenance, a ladder bike rack can definitely add some extra fun to every camping trip!

Be Safe Out There!

Overall, RV ladder bike racks are a great way to take your biking adventures on the road. There is a wide selection of high-quality racks available, so you’re sure to find the one that best meets your needs.

Before purchasing, consider the number and size of bikes you want to carry, how easy it will be to attach and remove each bike, and where on the RV you would like to mount it. Once you’ve chosen the right rack for your vehicle, installation is as simple as reading through the manufacturer’s guidelines and following their instructions.

Lastly, practice using your new rack a few times before hitting the road – it might take some effort initially but once you get used to it, unloading and loading your bikes onto an RV ladder bike rack will become second nature. Happy travels!

BPA Free, durable, versatile, and foldable with a lifetime guarantee.

We purchased these and used them within a couple of days. They are perfect for washing dishes, carrying items, and storage while camping. Overall great quality. They have very solid plastic handles and are super easy to clean when finished.

The Tiawudi 2-pack collapsible sinks have become an essential part of camping. Often we’ve used one for washing and the other for carrying items and storage.

Most importantly, it holds its shape which is why its the only collapsable product on best portable camping sinks list .

4. FOSJGO Dish Basin Collapsible with Drain Plug

Multipurpose, durable, space-saving, and large with integrated plug and drainer.

Our reviewers bought three of these tubs. Keeping one in the kitchen sink to soak dishes and the other two for fine washables.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61fHs7F-W5S.jpg" alt="Best Portable Camping Sinks review

You will need to apply some strength to pop the pedestals into place, but other than that, it’s pretty easy to put together.

Many reviewers use a regular 5-gallon bucket with a lid for the wastewater. The bucket just sits on top of the bottom base, tucked in neatly behind the pedestals, & is easy to carry out to dump, with the handle on the bucket.

Its cost $4,500 to $7,500 to rent an RV for 3 months. Although daily rentals can cost up to $100 per night, many RV owners and rental companies give deep discounts for long-term rentals.

So, expect to pay less than $100 a night for those 90 days, unless it’s a luxury RV. Luxury RV rental prices have skyrocketed but that’s nothing new.

RV Campground Rates

National Parks, RV Parks, and Campsites fees are in the $25 to $100 per night range. Join one of many camping discount clubs to cut costs or avoid fees by boondocking.

RV Rental Insurance

Some RV owners charge a small fee to add you to their insurance. In other cases, you will be charged anywhere from $293.42 to 493.53.

When you use a peer-to-peer RV rental service like Outdoorsy you are automatically enrolled with up to 1 million dollars in insurance protection.

From there you have the option to add other policies.

If you plan on renting a luxury RV, you want to look into purchasing Trip Insurance which can be an additional 7% of your total rental costs.

For estimation purposes, we suggest you take a nice round number like $300 and add it as your insurance cost. We are just trying to find a roundabout number so you have a better idea of how much will an RV rental cost you for 3 months.

Whichever RV rental company you choose, make sure to read the fine print. And, ask a representative or the owner specific questions about insurance.

Installation/Delivery Charges

When peer-to-peer RV renting, some owners offer to set up the RV at the campground you plan to occupy. Others require that they set up at the campground you’d be occupying.

This fee averaged $150 to $200.

RV Fuel Costs

Filling up a Rig can be a doozy, it’s nothing like filling up a car. Class A RVs can hold up to 150 gallons, other Class A RVs can average 100 gallons of fuel.

You may deal with a rental company or owner who has mileage restrictions and charge extra fees from $.25 to $.75 per mile over.

Also, there is often an additional fee for RVs returned without a full tank. Gasless return will cost you the amount to fill’er up and the additional $20 to $50.

Related: Is RVing Expensive?

RV Rental Amenities

Basically, the more comfortable your RV, the more expensive your 3 month trip will be.

Amenities can include a full kitchen, bathroom, and several beds. This can also include Kayaks, French Press, bike racks, canoe racks, propane, grills, RV air conditioners, backup cameras, etc.

RV Rental Cleaning Fees

Just like Airbnb, RV owners charge a cleaning fee of $50 to $100 (you may see it written as “Prep Fee”). Return the RV in good shape for the next renter and these fees shouldn’t be an issue.

Renting Taxes

You’ll pay taxes based on the state you are renting the RV in. So, when you rent an RV online from your house in Ohio, but the RV rental is in Detroit, you’ll pay Detroit sales taxes.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of A 12V Coffee Maker? A 12v coffee maker is a specially designed coffee maker that is low power, lightweight, and portable so your cup of jow fix is met no matter what you are doing.

While cruising, you can plug it in in your RV, car, or boat. You can also charge it before walking off.

Also, you can have it ready whenever you see fit. There really isn’t much into what you need in a 12V coffee maker.

Overall Pros

Easy To Clean

Easy To Pack and Carry

Easy To Heat

Overall Cons

Heat Time

Water Holder

Charge Time

The interesting thing is that the 12v cons are based on what you need a 12v coffee maker.

They are small and lightweight cause you need to be able to carry them around without issue. Because it is smaller, you will have a smaller battery which means slower heating time and battery time.

You should also expect it to cost more.

When off to camp or boondocking, an RV Portable Waste Tank aka Turd Toter comes in handy when you need to dump your grey and black holding tanks without moving your RV.

Here we highlight the best RV portable waste tank (or RV sewer tote) for your “belongings”. They come in 2 and 4 wheel models and various sizes.

You’ll notice that 4 wheelers dominate the list we reviewed, that’s simply because 2 wheelers can be harder to haul around. Portable waste tanks are heavy when full and you don’t have to heave 4 wheelers vertically.

4 wheelers like the Barker Tote Along roll flat, horizontally. 2 wheels are best for pop-up campers or travel trailers with smaller black or grey water tanks.

Yes, you can dump RV tanks at home. It is perfectly legal to dump RV black and grey tank matter in approved residential sewer systems.

If you are worried you may be breaking any laws, do a double-check with your local ordinances and restrictions. However, essentially, the gray and black water in an RV tank is the same as the waste that comes from your house.

Make sure you aren’t dumping into a storm drain. Turd Totes can be dumped in your toilet at home.

Here’s what you’ll need to build your soundproof generator box using my recommended method. I have put the relevant Amazon links for each:

MDF (medium-density fiberboard)

Foam mats

MLV (What is “mass loaded vinyl”)

Green Glue

A Ventilation Duct

Measure the generator. To build the box and add insulation, take the dimensions of your generator and add a few inches on either side.

Cut the pieces out of the MDF. You’ll obviously need 6 pieces for each side, so make sure you’ve got enough MDF to complete the project. Use a right-angled ruler to ensure your measurements are straight and correct.

Next, cut ventilation holes. Measure the diameter of the ventilation duct to get the right size.

Cut one ventilation duct in the ceiling panel. This should be over in one corner. Cut the other hole in one of the wall panels, and the hole should be in the opposite bottom corner, so they’re almost diagonal.

Then add a layer of mass-loaded vinyl to the inside of the panels. This should be glued directly to the MDF. Use Green Glue to seal the edges of each piece of mass-loaded vinyl to ensure they’re stuck down properly.

Next, add a layer of foam mats. This doesn’t necessarily help with sound absorption, but aids sound reflection, which makes it harder for sound waves to bounce around inside the box.

Same as with the mass-loaded vinyl, seal the edges with Green Glue for that extra bit of soundproofing.

Assemble the box, securing the panels together with screws and Green Glue where needed. Attach the lid with hinges for easy access once the generator is inside.

Finally, add the vents and seal them with Green Glue. Use some vent ducts to ensure the generator has a good air supply. Putting kinks in the duct will help deflect sound waves as they travel down it.

Can You Enclose A Portable Generator? Yes, you can enclose a portable generator. See above for examples, videos and instructions.

How Much Clearance Does A Generator Need?

3 to 5 feet is the optimal amount of clearance a generator needs.
